Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis: Image

What is it?

The bones that form the spinal column usually align perfectly on top of each other.  Spondylolisthesis occurs when a lumbar vertebra slips forward from its usual position.  It is most commonly due to degeneration but can also occur due to a birth defect in a particular area of the spine, stress fractures (overuse injury) and trauma.

What are the symptoms?

This is a very common condition and symptoms may vary.  Many patients will experience no symptoms whilst other may complain of back pain, tight hamstrings or nerve entrapment causing leg pain.

Treatments

Activity modification, painkillers, maintaining good core strength, physical therapy and even intermittent brace usage can be beneficial. If those methods are not successful, you may benefit from a surgical procedure to reduce nerve compression or to stabilize your spine.
